Author and crafter Kathryn Vercillo released "Crochet Saved My Life: The Mental and Physical Health Benefits of Crochet," a collection of stories from more than two dozen women who have used crochet hooks and yarn to cope with their own medical challenges. The self-published book supplements its interviews with professional and medical advice as well as details of Kathryn's own struggle with double depression and how crochet helped her overcome it. In an interview with the Examiner this week, she shares why she appreciates crochet: "I was able to pick it up quickly so there was instant gratification. It was something affordable that I could do from my own home when leaving the house seemed completely overwhelming due to depression. It was meditative and soothing and that helped calm the anxiety that was coming along with the depression."
