This simple scarf is a great first project to begin learning brioche stitches. Knit flat, it uses a single, easy-to-memorize pattern row to create the textured brioche pattern and knit-in garter-stitch borders. Use a soft, lofty yarn to create deep, puffy ribbing.

Finished size:
About 7" (18 cm) wide and 60" (152.5 cm) long, blocked.
Yarn Worsted weight (#4 Medium).

Pictured: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted Solids (100% superwash merino wool; 225 yd [205 m]/4 oz [113 g]), butterscotch, 2 skeins.

Needles: Size U.S. 6 (4 mm): straight or circular. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions:
Locking stitch marker (locking m); tapestry needle.

Gauge:
18 sts and 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) in brioche rib, unstretched, blocked.

NEXT ROW: K3, [sl1yo, brk1] 13 times, k3. Rep last row until piece measures 591/2" (151 cm), or 1/2" (1.3 cm) less than desired length, ending with a WS row.

NEXT ROW: (RS) K3, [k1, brk1] 13 times, k3. Knit 5 rows. Loosely BO all sts.

Step 2
