Child's Viking Hat (Free Knitting and Crochet Pattern)

Is there anyone who doesn't like How to Train Your Dragon? Bring out your child's inner Viking with this intermediate project. Crocheted horns are added to this otherwise classic knit hat.
 
Skill Level: Intermediate
 
Finished Dimensions: 17-1/2" (44.5 cm) circumference with notes for adjusting size
 
Yarn: Lion Brand Yarns Vanna’s Choice, a 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn packaged in 3.5 oz/ 100 g balls containing 170 yd/156 m: 1 ball silver for MC and 1 ball white for CC
 
Needles: 4.5 mm/U.S. 7
 
Other Materials:
3.5 mm/U.S. E-4 crochet hook
Fiberfill for horns
 
Gauge: 17 sts = 4" (10 cm)

Step 1

Special Stitches
Bobble: Knit in front and back of same st 5 times, turn; p5, turn; k5, turn; p5, slip 2nd st from end over first st until 1 st remains.
 
5x2 Ribbing
RS Rows: (K5, p2) across.
 
WS Rows: (K2, p5) across.

Step 2

Brim
With MC, cast on 11 sts.
 
Row 1: K1, (p1, k1) across.
 
Rows 2–8: Rep Row 1.
 
Row 9: K5, bobble, k5.
 
Row 10: P.
 
Rep Rows 1–10 until piece measures 17-1/2" (44.5 cm) or desired circumference, ending with Row 10.

Step 3

Hat
On one side of Brim, pick up and knit 84 sts. (If you expanded the Brim circumference, pick up in a multiple of 7 sts.)
 
Work in 5x2 ribbing until piece, including Brim, is 5-1/2" (14 cm) tall.

Step 4

Beg Decreases
Row 1: (K5, p2tog) across. (72 sts)
 
Row 2: (K1, p5) across.
 
Row 3: (K4, p2tog) across. (60 sts)
 
Row 4: (K1, p4) across.
 
Row 5: (K3, p2tog) across. (48 sts)
 
Row 6: (K1, p3) across.
 
Row 7: (K2, p2tog) across. (36 sts)
 
Row 8: (K1, p2) across.
 
Row 9: (K1, p2tog) across. (24 sts)
 
Row 10: K.
 
Row 11: K2tog across. (12 sts)
 
Row 12: K.
 
Row 13: K2tog across. (6 sts)
 
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining sts and pull up tight to close. Sew back seam of hat.

Step 5

Horns (make 2)
With CC and crochet hook, ch 2.
 
Rnd 1: 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (4 sc)
 
Rnd 2: 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc. (5 sc)
 
Rnd 3: 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc. (6 sc)
 
Rnd 4: 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc. (7 sc)
 
Continue as established, inc 1 st each rnd until there are 18 sts.
 
Next 3 Rnds: Work even in sc.
 
Fasten off. Stuff and shape Horns. Sew to Helmet.
