This Strawberry Shortcake with Chocolate Truffles has inspired more than just a rampant sweet tooth. Excerpted from Patchwork Party: 10 Festive Quilts and the Recipes that Inspired Them by Sandy Bonsib, this recipe was the muse for a lively quilt that pairs cozy yellow and red with fresh black and white. Both this dessert and the quilt it inspired are both decadent treats for cool summer nights.

- „„1 cup milk

Whipped Cream
- „1 pint heavy whipping cream „„
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar or regular sugar „„
- 2 teaspoons real vanilla extract

If strawberries are not sweet, slice them, sprinkle them with sugar, and let them stand 1 hour. This is a trick my mother taught me. Your strawberries will become sweet and juicy!

Step 1

Measure flour, sugar, baking powder and salt into a bowl. Cut in the shortening until the mixture looks well blended. Stir in milk just until blended.

Step 2

Using a large spoon, place 6 heaping spoonfuls of dough onto a greased cookie sheet. Each spoonful of dough will make a shortcake. Bake 15–20 minutes at 450°.

Step 3

While shortcakes bake, whip cream until soft peaks form. Add the sugar and vanilla. Continue whipping until stiff peaks form.

Step 4

The shortcakes should be golden brown. Check a shortcake to be sure it’s done by piercing the center with a toothpick. If the toothpick comes out clean, the shortcake is done. Remove shortcakes from the cookie sheet immediately. Split the shortcakes while warm. Spread with butter. Fill with berries, and put more berries on top. Add whipped cream.

Step 5

Using your favorite recipe, make chocolate truffles to go with your strawberry shortcake, or purchase truffles at your favorite candy store.
