First, cut the legs off the jeans approximately 12” down from the inner crotch seam.
Using your seam ripper, rip the inner double seams open first, then rip the outer seams open up to the waist band.
Remove the waist band from the front side of the jeans only at the seam. You will also have to remove the belt loops from the front side in order to remove the waistband.
The front and the back of the jeans are now separated.
Take the front of the jeans and rip the crotch seam up to the bottom end of the zipper.
Lay the front of the jeans, right side up, on a flat surface. Take the upper crotch seam and lay it over the under crotch seam, creating a flat surface and pin in place. See Fig. A.
Topstitch this crotch seam onto the opposite crotch seam. See Fig. B.
With the front of your jeans lying right side up on a flat surface, measure and place marks approximately 12” down from the top raw edge of the jeans and cut off straight across front. See Fig. C.
Cut two 6” wide by approximately 44” long strips from the waistband/ties fabric. Cut two 4” wide by approximately 22” long strips from side binding fabric. Cut one 4” wide by approximately 44” long strip from bottom section fabric.
Cut two 4” wide by approximately 22” long strips from side binding fabric. Cut one 4” wide by approximately 44” long strip from bottom section fabric.
With WST, fold one of the side binding strips in half lengthwise and press. Unfold and fold the two side raw seams into the center aligning with the center fold and press. Fold the entire length over again and press. Repeat for the second side binding strip.
Center and place one of the side binding strips along one side of the front denim utility apron. Encasing the raw edge of the denim inside the folded side binding strip approximately 1/2”. Pin in place and topstitch close to the open edge. Trim off the excess binding fabric flush with the top and bottom raw edge of the utility belt. Repeat for the second side binding strip. See Figs. D & E.
Sew the two waistband/tie strips together to create one long strip. See Figs. F & G.
With WST, fold the waistband/tie strip in half lengthwise and press. Unfold and fold the two side raw seams into the center aligning with the center fold and press. Fold the entire length over again and press.
Center and place the waistband/tie strip along the top raw edge of the front denim utility apron. Placing the top raw edge inside the folded waistband strip approximately 1/2”, pin in place and topstitch close to the open edge for the entire length of the waistband/tie strip. See Fig. H.
Fold one end of the waist tie 1/2”, twice, and stitch. Repeat for opposite end of tie.
With RST, center and place the bottom section fabric onto the bottom raw edge of the utility apron, aligning the two raw edges. Stitch a 1/2” seam allowance. Unfold and press seam down toward bottom of apron.
Trim the excess fabric from both sides leaving approximately 2” from side binding. See Fig. I.
Fold one side of the bottom section to the wrong side 1” twice, aligning with side binding then stitch close to open edge. Repeat for the opposite side of the bottom section. See Fig. J.
To hem the bottom section, fold to the wrong side 1/2” twice and topstitch close to the open edge. See Fig. K.
Stitch three buttons vertically in place next to side binding at the top corner of one of the front pockets. Refer to photograph for location.
