I have a particular fondness for baskets – I grew up around lots of them. My mother is an avid basket collector, especially wicker baskets. She loves to fill them up with sweet-smelling potpourri, or delicious tea to give to family and friends. Stumbling across baskets on Domino.com recently brought back childhood memories, and also inspired ways to add colorful twists to the classic basket designs my mother loves.

Which one of these modern updates is your favorite?

DIY woven basket with pom-poms
Pom-Poms
Pom-poms are a simple yet effective way to make baskets more festive and summer-ready. Check out this super-cute Olli EllaPom Pom Belly Basket

Or, if you’re feeling crafty (like I was) make a DIY version by creating your own pom-poms! In addition to a basket (which you can find at a secondhand or craft store), all you need is yarn, a fork and scissors. Pom-poms are easy and quick to make; the video tutorial below can show you how:

Africa Mini Tassel Peace Basket
Tassels
Tassels are another way to add special charm to baskets. I love this Indego Africa Mini Tassel Peace Basket on Domino. Like pom-poms, tassels are easy to make and add to a basket, too! I made mine with scrap yarn I had lying around. Grab a skein of yarn in your favorite color, and try making some of your own. The video tutorial below offers excellent instructions.

Fringe
Yet another great embellished basket option on Domino is the Pink & White Eyelash Basket! How adorable is this?! With a bit of embroidery thread, you can craft your own basket lashes (or fringe). Simply cut multiple strands of embroidery thread in the same length, then attach them to your favorite basket using a lark’s head knott.

And there you have it: three creative ways to spruce up classically woven baskets. Whether you make them or buy them, they’re sure to add charm to your decor.
