This free lace scarf pattern is courtesy of Lion Brand. It's great for knitting beginners and works best with cashmere or other light yarns. Make this free scarf pattern, which is perfect for those chilly fall and winter months.

SIZE: One Size 5 x 74 in. (12.5 x 188 cm)
 
NOTE: Stitch count will change from 34 sts on Row 1, to 30 sts on Rows 2–7, to 34 sts on Row 8 of Lace Pattern.

k2tog= knit two together
p= purl
RS= right side
tbl= through the back loop
WS= wrong side
k= knit
k3tog= knit three together
rep= repeat(s)(ing)
st(s)= stitch(es)
tog= together
yo= yarn over
 
Special Stitch
sk2p= Slip 1 stitch as if to knit, k2tog, pass slipped stitch over – (2 sts dec).

Step 1

GAUGE
27 sts + 26 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in Lace Pattern. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Step 2

LACE PATTERN (multiple of 17 sts, dec to 15 sts on Rows 2–7)
Row 1 (WS): Purl.
Row 2 (RS): *K1, yo, k1, k2tog tbl, p1, k2tog, k1, p1, k2, p1, k2tog, k1, p1, k1; rep from * across.
Row 3: *P4, (k1, p2) twice, k1, p4; rep from * across.
Row 4: *(K1, yo) twice, k2tog tbl, p1, k2tog, p1, k2tog tbl, p1, k2tog, (yo, k1) twice; rep from * across.
Row 5: *P5, (k1, p1) twice, k1, p5; rep from * across.
Row 6: *K1, yo, k3, yo, sk2p, p1, k3tog, yo, k3, yo, k1; rep from * across.
Row 7: *P7, k1, p7; rep from * across.
Row 8: *K1, yo, k5, yo, sk2p, yo, k5, yo, k1; rep from * across.
Rep Rows 1-8 for Lace Pattern.

Step 3

SCARF
Cast on 34 sts.
Beg with Row 1, rep Rows 1-8 of Lace Pattern until piece measures about 72 in. (91.5 cm) from beg, end with a Row 8. Bind off.

Step 4

FINISHING
Weave in ends.
