Crocheted Mary Janes for Babies

The soft pastel colors used in the design of these crocheted Mary Janes make the shoes a perfect springtime gift.The little bows and buttons create adorable accents to this classic design.

MATERIALS NEEDED
Worsted weight
100% cotton
(82 yds/75 m, 1.75 oz/50 g)
* 1 ball in the following colors:
ecru (A), lilac (B)
* Small amounts in the
following colors:
sky blue (C), lime green (D),
pale yellow (E), apricot (F)
 
EQUIPMENT
* US G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook
* Tapestry needle
* Two 5⁄8" (15 mm) buttons
Gauge
17 sts and 13 rows = 4" (10 cm) in
half double crochet

Step 1

SOLE
Foundation ch: With A, ch 9.
Round 1: Work 3 dc in third ch from hook, 1 dc in each of next 5 ch, 7 dc in last chain, turn piece with remaining edge of foundation ch at top, 1 dc in each of next 5 ch, 3 dc in last ch, join with a sl st in first dc. (23 sts)
Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in next 3 sts, 1 dc in next 5 sts. 2 dc in each of next 7 sts, 1 dc in next 5 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, join with a sl st in top of first dc. (36 sts)
Fasten off.

Step 2

UPPER
Round 1: With B and RS facing, ch 1, work hdc in back loop only of
each st around, join with a sl st in first hdc. (36 sts)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc around, join with a sl st in first sc.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in next 10 sts, hdc2tog 3 times, hdc in next 4 sts,
hdc2tog 3 times, sc to end, join with a sl st in first sc. (30 sts remain)
Round 4: Ch 1, sc in next 6 sts, hdc in next st, dc2tog 6 times, hdc into next st, sc to end, join with a sl st in first sc.
(24 sts remain)
Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

Step 3

STRAPS (make 2)
Foundation ch: With B, ch 16. Row 1: Beg in sixth ch from hook work
hdc in next st to form button loop, then hdc to end. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Step 4

BOW
Foundation ch: With B, ch 10.
Row 1: Beg in second ch from hook, hdc in each ch to end, change to C.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, hdc in each st across, change to D.
Row 3: Ch 2, turn, hdc across, change to E.
Row 4: Ch 2, turn, hdc across, change to F.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, hdc across, change to B.
Row 6: Ch 1, turn, hdc across. Fasten off.

Step 5

FINISHING
Weave in all ends.
Sew one strap to each shoe, making sure straps are on opposite sides to each other. Sew a button to each shoe on opposite straps.
Pinch center of bow together using
photo as a guide, sew a few sts around
center of bow with B, then sew bow
to shoe.
