These letter tile coasters are ideal for spelling out a statement of intent to your dinner guests (i.e. “it’s ‘vino’ time”), but the pattern can easily be adapted to other uses such as creating colorful lettered bunting for a special occasion.

This project uses the “VINO” Letter Tile, or for different letters, Sans Serif Uppercase Charts. On the chart of your chosen letter, draw a box around the letter that is 23 sts wide and 22 rows high, making sure the letter is in the center. If your letter has an even number of sts, one side will have 1 st extra.

Step 2

Using MC, CO 17 sts.
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): P1f&b, p to last st, p1f&b. 19 sts
Row 3: K1f&b, k to last st, k1f&b. 21 sts
Row 4: As row 2. 23 sts

Step 3

Commence “VINO” Letter Tile Chart

With MC for the background and CC for the letter, cont in st st and work rows 1–22 of the chart using the stranding technique.

Continue in MC only as follows:
Row 27: Knit.
Row 28: P2tog, p to last st, p2tog. 21 sts
Row 29: K2tog, k to last st, k2tog. 19 sts
Row 30: As row 2. 17 sts4

Step 4

Finishing

Weave in ends and block or press the coaster according to the instructions on the ball band. Sew in all ends neatly. Using sewing thread, sl st the knitted coaster to the felt around all edges.
