SKILL LEVEL: Easy
 
SIZE: One Size
Scarf about 7 x 66 in (18 x 167.5 cm)
Hat about 19 in. (48.5 cm) circumference, will stretch to fit a range of sizes.
 
GAUGE: 18 sts = about 4 in. (10 cm) in K2, p2 Rib, slightly stretched. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
 
NOTES:
 
MATERIALS NOTES
1. For Hat only, you will need 1 ball of each color yarn. For Scarf only, you will need 2 balls of each color.
2. Scarf can be worked back and forth in rows on circular needle or on straight needles.

Step 1

STITCH EXPLANATION:
 
PATTERN STITCHES
K2, p2 Rib worked in rnds (multiple of 4 sts)
Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 1 for K2, p2 Rib worked in the rnd.
K2, p2 Rib worked back and forth in rows (multiple of 4 sts + 2)
Row 1: K2, *p2, k2; rep from * to end of row.
Row 2: K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Rep Row 2 for K2, p2 Rib worked back and forth in rows.
 

Step 2

STRIPE SEQUENCE
Work in stitch pattern as noted for Hat or Scarf, changing colors as follows:
Work 2 rows with A
2 rows with B
2 rows with A
2 rows with B
8 rows with A
2 rows with B
2 rows with A
2 rows with B
2 rows with A
6 rows with B
Rep these 30 rows for Stripe Sequence, working in st pattern specified for Hat or Scarf.

Step 3

SCARF
With straight needles and A, cast on 50 sts.
Working in K2, p2 Rib worked back and forth in rows and changing color following Stripe Sequence, rep Rows 1-30 of Stripe Sequence until piece measures about 66 in. (167.5 cm) from beg.
Bind off.

Step 4

HAT
With circular needle and A, cast on 88 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd andjoin by working first st on left needle with yarn from right needle, being careful not to twist sts. Slip marker as each rnd is completed.
Rnds 1-11;
Work in K2, p2 Rib worked in rnds changing color following Stripe Sequence.
Rnd 12 (Turning Ridge for cuff): Continuing in Stripe Sequence, *p2, k2; rep from * around.
Rnds 13-44: Continue in K2, p2 Rib and Stripe Sequence.
Shape Crown (top of Hat)
 
NOTES
1. Continue in Stripe Sequence as you shape the crown.
2. As you work Rnd 45, change to double pointed needles (dpn) by knitting or purling sts onto one dpn at a time, 16 sts onto first dpn, 16 sts onto second dpn, 17 sts onto third anf fourth dpn. Remember to move your marker to the dpn as well!
Rnd 45 (Decrease Rnd): *P2, k2tog; rep from * around - 66 sts at the end of this rnd.
Rnd 46; *P2, k1; rep from * around.
Rnds 47-48: Rep Rnd 46, continuing in Stripe Sequence.
Rnd 49 (Decrease Rnd): *P2tog, k1; rep from * around - 44 sts.
Rnd 50; *P1, k1; repeat from * around.
Rnd 51 (Decrease Rnd): *K2tog; rep from * around - 22 sts.
Rnd 52: Knit.
Rnd 53 (Decrease Rnd): K2tog around. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through rem sts, gather tightly and knot.
 
FINISHING
Weave in ends.
