V-Neck Pullover Sweater with Belt (Free Pattern)

This V-neck pullover with crossover neckline and matching belt is standard-fitting. Sized for Small/Medium, Large/XLarge, and XX-Large. Directions are for smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses. If there is only one figure, it applies to all sizes.
 
UPDATE: This pattern was found by one of our CraftFoxes, Ruth Sher, to have a missing stitch in Row 5. The pattern has been updated to reflect the fix.
 
KNITTED MEASUREMENTS
• Bust 42 (49, 56)”/107 (124, 142) cm
• Length 26 (26½, 27)”/66 (67, 68.5) cm
• Upper arm 15 (16, 17)”/38 (40.5, 43) cm
 
MATERIALS
• 16 (18, 20) 1¾oz/50g balls (each approx 175yd/ 160m) of Lana Grossa Cool Wool 2000 (wool) in #475 tan
• To substitute, seek a DK-weight yarn with similar fiber content
• One pair size 6 (4mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
 
GAUGES
• 25 sts and 30 rows = 4”/10 cm over diamond pat st using size 6 (4mm) needles.
• 42 sts and 48 rows = 6”/15 cm over twisted rib pat using size 6 (4mm) needles. TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGES.

Step 1

STITCH GLOSSARY
Twisted Rib Pattern Stitch (over a multiple of 3 sts plus 2 selvage sts)
Row 1 (RS) K1 (selvage st), * p2, k1tbl; rep from * end k1 (selvage st).
Row 2 (WS) K1, * k2, pl tbl; rep from *, end k1.
Rep these 2 rows for twisted rib pat st.
 
Sloped bind-off
To eliminate the “stair-step” resulting from regular bind-offs, use sloped bindoff method on all bind-offs. To work sloped bind-off, sl the last st worked (or the first st of the bind-off on the next row). On the bind-off, wyib, sl this st over the next st to make the first st bind-off, then bind off as usual.

Step 3

BACK
Cast on 134 (156, 178) sts. Work in diamond pat st until piece measures 18½ (18, 17½)”/47 (45.5, 44.5) cm
from beg.
 
Armhole shaping
Bind off 5 (5, 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows, 3 (4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows, 2 (3, 3) sts at beg of next 6 (4,
6) rows, 1 (2, 2) sts at beg of next 6 (8, 10) rows, 0 (1, 1) st at beg of next 0 (4, 6) rows—100 (106, 114) sts. Work even until armhole measures 6¾ (7¾, 8¾)”/17 (19.5, 22) cm.
 
Neck shaping
Next row (RS) Work 37 (40, 42) sts, join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 26 (26, 30) sts, work to end.
Working both sides at once, bind off 7 sts from each neck edge twice. When armhole measures 7½ (8½, 9½)”/19 (21.5, 24), bind off rem 23 (26, 28) sts each side for shoulders.

Step 4

FRONT
Work as for back until piece measures 15 (15½, 16)”/38 (39.5, 40.5) cm from beg.
 
V-neck shaping
Next row (RS) Work 66 (77, 88) sts, join a 2nd ball of yarn and bind off center 2 sts, work to end. Working
both sides at once, bind off (using sloped bind-off method), binding off 1 st 26 (26, 28) times, AT SAME TIME, work armhole shaping when same length as back. When all neck shaping is completed and 23 (26, 28) sts rem each side, work even until same length as back to shoulder. Bind off sts each side for shoulders.

Step 5

SLEEVES
Cast on 68 (68, 80) sts.
Set up diamond pat st as foll:
For sizes Small/Medium and Large/XLarge: Work k1 (selvage st), work 3 reps of 22-st pat, k1 (selvage st)
For size XX-Large: k1 (selvage st), work the last 6 pat sts of the rep, work 3 reps of 22-st pat, work the first 6 pat sts of the rep, k1 (selvage st). Work even in diamond pat st until piece measures 4”/10 cm from beg. Inc 1 st each side of next row then every 6th row 6 (5, 6) times, every 7th (5th, 7th) row 7 (11, 7) times—96 (102, 108) sts. Work even until piece measures 17”/43 cm from beg.

Step 6

Cap shaping
Bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows, [2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 1 st at beg of next 2 rows] 5 (6, 6) times, 3 (3, 1) sts at beg of next 4 (4, 2) rows, 3 sts at beg of next 0 (0, 4) rows. Bind off rem 22 (22, 26) sts.
 
Neckband
Cast on 23 sts. Row 1 (RS) K1 (selvage st), p1, k1 tbl, * p2, k1 tbl; rep from *, end p1, k1 (selvage st). Row
2 (WS) K2, * p1 tbl, k2; rep from *, end p1 tbl, k2. Rep these 2 rows for twisted rib pat st for 30¼ (30¾, 31¾)”/77 (78, 80.5) cm. Bind off loosely in pat.

Step 7

BELT
Cast on 3 sts. K1 row. Purl next row inc 1 p st at each end of row—5 sts. Next row (RS) K1 into front and back of first st, p1, k1 tbl, p1, k1 into front and back of last st—7 sts. Cont to inc 1 st each side every row (and add sts at center into pat) until there are 23 sts (there are 19 sts in pat with 4 edges sts) and this is pat row 9. On next row (pat row 10), inc 1 st only at beg of row for 24 sts. Then, beg with pat row 11, cont in pat on the 22 sts (with 2 selvage sts) until 19 (20 rows) pat reps are completed, end with row 17 of last pat rep.

Step 8

Prepare trim for back point
On row 18, inc 1 st inside the selvage sts—26 sts. On row 20, inc again at end of row—27 sts. To dec for the
back point, work dec’ing over 13 rows as foll: Dec 1 st at each edge on every row inside the selvage sts. On RS rows, ssk after the selvage and k2tog before the end of selvage. On WS rows, p2tog after the selvage and ssp before the end selvage. After working row 10 of pat, there are 7 sts. Next row (RS) K1, ssk, k1, k2tog, k1—5 sts. Next row P3tog. Next row Sl 2 knitwise, k next st, pass the sl sts over the k st. Fasten off. Belt measures approx 56”/142 cm long.
 
FINISHING
Block pieces to measurements. Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams. Set in sleeves. Sew collar around neck
overlapping the right side over the left.
