Wrapped Cardigan from Vogue Knitting (Free Pattern)

This loose-fitting, wrapped cardigan was designed by Oscar for Oscar de la Renta. Its diagonal ribbing and cabled-front panels add a little slouchy style to your winter wardrobe.
 
This knitting pattern includes measurements for a size small (larger sizes in parentheses).

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS
-Bust 38 (42, 46)"/96.5 (106.5, 117) cm
-Length 23 (23½, 24)"/58.5 (59.5, 61) cm
-Upper arm 14 (15, 16)"/35.5 (38, 40.5) cm
 

MATERIALS
-23 (25, 27) 1¾oz/50g balls (each approx 70yd/65m) of Needful Yarns and Things Modiglini (wool) in #03 taupe
-To substitute, seek a worsted-weight yarn with similar fiber content
-One pair each sizes 9 and 10½ (5.5 and 6.5mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN

GAUGES
-19 sts and 22 rows = 4"/10 cm over k3, p6 diagonal rib using larger needles.
-17 sts and 23 rows = 4"/10 cm over k3, p6 rib using larger needles. TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGES.

Step 1

STITCH GLOSSARY
 
Left-Slating Diagonal Rib (multiple of 9 sts)
 
Row 1 (RS) *P6, k3; rep from *to end.
Row 2 P2, k, k2tog, *p3, M1, k4, k2tog; rep from * to last 6 sts, M1, k5, p1.
Row 3 and all foll RS rows K the knit sts and p the purl sts.
Row 4 P1, k5, k2tog; rep from *in row 2 to last 7 sts, M1, k, p2.
Row 6 K5, k2tog; rep from * in row 2 to last 8 sts, Ml, k5, p3.
Row 8 K4, k2tog; rep from * in row 2 to last 3 sts, p2, M1-p, k1.

Step 3

Left Twist (LT)
(over 2 sts)
Row 1 (RS) Skip first st on LH needle and k 2nd st behind first st, then k first st and drop both sts from LH needle.
Row 2 (WS) P2. Rep rows 1 and 2 for left twist.
 
6-ST LC
(over 6 sts)
Rows 1 and 3 (RS) K6.
Rows 2, 4 and 6 P6.
Row 5 Sl 3 sts to cn and hold to front, k3, k3 from cn.
Rep rows 1-6 for 6-st LC.
 
8-ST RC
(over 8 sts)
Rows 1, 3, 5 and 7 (RS) K8.
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 (WS) P8.
Row 9 Sl 4 sts to cn and hold to back, k4, k4 from cn.
Rep rows 1-10 for 8-st RC.

Step 4

BACK
 
With larger needles, cast on 90 (100, 108) sts. Beg with p6 (p2, p6), work left-slanting diagonal rib over first 45 (50, 54) sts, pm, beg with k3, work right-slanting diagonal rib over last 45 sts, end with p6 (p2, p6). Cont in pats as established until piece measures 15”/38 cm from beg, end with a WS row.
 
Aarmhole shaping
 
Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 2 sts at beg of next 2 (4, 4) rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 3 (3, 5) times—66 (72, 76) sts. Work even until armhole measures 8 (8½, 9) “/20.5 (21.5, 23) cm. Bind off all sts.

Step 5

LEFT FRONT
 
With larger needles, cast on 63 (67, 71) sts. Beg with p6 (p1, p5), work left-slanting diagonal rib, AT SAME TIME, dec 1 st at front edge every 4th row 25 times, every other row 10 times, AT SAME TIME, when same length as back to armhole, shape armhole at side edge as for back. When same length as back, bind off rem 16 (18, 20) sts for shoulder.
 
RIGHT FRONT
 
With larger needles, cast on 63 (67, 71) sts. Beg with k3, work rightslanting diagonal rib, and reverse shaping as for left front.

Step 6

CABLE BAND
 
With larger needles, cast on 30 sts. Beg cable pats Row 1 (RS) P2, LT, p2, 8-st RC, p2, k3, p2, 6-st LC, p3. Cont in past as established, working sts outside cable pats as k the knit sts and p the purl sts, until piece fits along left front, back neck and right front edges. Note Sew shoulder seams and pin band in place while knitting, beg at right front edge, if desired for ease in measuring. Bind off. Sew band to fronts and back neck.

Step 7

SLEEVES
 
With larger needles, cast on 39 sts. Beg cable and rib pats Row 1 (RS) K1, p4, work 30 sts cable pats as for cable band, p3, k. Cont in pats as established, working sts outside cable pats in p6, k3 rib, AND inc 1 st each side (working inc sts into p6, k3 rib) every 8th (6th, 4th) row 12 (16, 9) times, every 0 (0, 6th) row 0 (0, 10) times—63 (71, 77) sts. Work even until piece measures 19”/48 cm from beg, end with a WS row.
 
Cap shaping
Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows, 2 sts at beg of next 2 (4, 4) rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 8 (8, 9) times. Bind off 4 (5, 6) sts at beg of next 4 rows. Bind off rem 13 sts.

Step 8

BELT
 
With smaller needles, cast on 7 sts. Preparation row (RS) *K1, p1; rep from *, end p1. Row 1 *P1, k1; rep from *, end p1. Row 2 Sl 1 wyib, *p1, k1; rep from * to last st, sl 1 wyib. Rep rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 31”/78.5 cm. Bind off. Make a 2nd belt 45”/114 cm long.

Step 9

FINISHING
 
Block pieces to measurements. Sew shoulder seams. Set in sleeves. Sew side seams, leaving a 1”/2.5 cm opening at 8”/20.5 cm above lower edge on right seam for belt. Sew sleeve seams. Sew one end of longer belt to left front edge at 8”/20.5 cm above lower edge (to make opening on right seam). Sew shorter belt to right front edge.
