Granny Square Pillow (Free Crochet Pattern)

Granny squares often make-up blankets, a project that can take weeks, if not months, to complete. However, turning the squares into a small throw pillow adds just as much charm as a blanket but demanding only an afternoon or two to finish. A fabric backing adds bright contrast while also saving time. Use any granny square pattern or use the one below.

Materials:

- 2 or 3 skeins of colored yarn
- Crochet hook (check yarn weight)
- Pillow form
- Fabric to cover one side of pillow
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating thread

to complete the square. Sl st to join round.

Repeat for 4 to 5 more rows, or until the square is as large as you want. Create 9 squares, or as many as you need to cover the pillow form without pulling the squares too tightly.

Step 2

Lay out the colored granny squares to decide the order. Once decided, turn squares to the wrong side. Using an embroidery needle threaded with yarn, whip stitch squares together, working first in vertical rows and then horizontal.

Step 3

Cut fabric to size of pillow form, plus a 1/2" seam allowance on each side for a snug-fitting pillow. Pin edges 1/2" down, and then pin pieced granny square front to it, both sides wrong side out. Sew together the pillow front and back with a sewing machine. Leave one side unstitched to insert pillow form.

Step 4

Turn the cover right side out and insert pillow. Whipstitch the last side closed.
